“Really,… You eat that?”
January 4th, 2010 by Chef Christi

What do you think brings people to their choices as they walk through a grocery store isle?  Hunger, stress, the size of the new Oreo cookie bag?  Does the strange sounding, tongue twisting words entice the saliva glands to go out of control, or could it be the ungodly amount of sugar and carbs, that grace the back label.

Why when we honestly know better, do we subject our bodies to such horrible things?  What happened to the sweet smell of fresh baked cookies, and flour tossed all over the kitchen floor?  Why is it so cool now to take that stick of cookie dough, or sheet, can’t forget those, and bake them, thinking this is homemade?  News flash!!! Opening a box is not homemade!!!  Just because you opened the box in your kitchen, does not qualify as scratch made!!!

Have we run ourselves into such a frenzie, that we don’t think our bodies, or even ourselves are worth, natural homemade cooking?  I lived in Italy while serving in the Air Force, and they close the whole town down for lunch!!! Could you imagine, the US taking a siesta?  What should we do?!!?

People cooked from scratch, with natural products for centuries.  Vegetables picked from the garden, or purchased from the local market.  Animals that grazed on grass and other natural items that the earth provided, running free, then becoming a part of our meal.

What are you going to do to keep the momentum of bringing the food sources back to reality and out of big business pocket books?  It takes one person at a time, with the true passion for food, to make a difference.  Creating that amazing feeling of buying fresh fruits and vegetables from a local farmers market, or stand, taking these vibrant ingredients home, then turning them into pieces of edible art that you created!  The textures and aroma’s are so different.  The feeling within you is so different!!!

I challenge you, to taking that extra step.  I challenge you to turn off your TV, computer, IPOD, whatever it may be, long enough, to give you the supposed time you say you don’t have, and find that local produce stand, and local butcher. Buy from a local bakery.  Then take that food home and create a meal from your heart and soul.  Sit and enjoy every bite.  Savory the moment the aroma’s fill the air, and the sizzling sounds caress your ears. Feel your spirit rise like the fresh baked bread you got from the hard working baker.  Bring the moment back to food.  Bring the nourishment back to your life.  Food is not the enemy, it is the fuel for not just your body but your soul.  Embrace it as a true friend, someone you can trust.  Stop punishing yourself with what you know is wrong, and stand strong!!!!
